Coworking Etiquette 101
Post-pandemic consumer behavior has been…questionable at best. Especially in public spaces.
Offices are bustling with employees, subways are filled with commuters again and coworking spaces are filled with freelancers, entrepreneurs, and small businesses.
Coworking spaces bring together hundreds of different personalities, sensory issues, likes, and dislikes which is why it’s important to follow common etiquette rules so everyone can work harmoniously.
Following those rules can help everyone excel in their tasks, thrive in their work environment, and create a productive space.
Productivity = $$$$
So, what exactly is considered coworking etiquette? We tapped into the coworking queen herself, Lisa Skye, co-founder of PRIMARY Coworking, to share what she considers the top 5 etiquette rules for coworking spaces:
Mind your volume: Be mindful of the volume of your voice especially when working in open spaces (don't be THAT PERSON who roams the halls outside of offices, or sits in the open workspace, talking with a loud voice). Pro tip: you can whisper into your microphone on your phone or laptop and the person on the other end will hear you just fine!
Read the room: Try to reduce interrupting someone when you can see they’re working in an open space and "in the zone.” Be mindful of speaking to people when they may not want to engage.
Hygiene matters: Please wear deodorant and try not to drench yourself in fragrances -- we are COworking which means we may be sitting close to one another, and odors travel :)
Be nice: Community and a created sense of belonging is the main POINT of opting for coworking. If you're not up for contributing to the community, consider taking a private space or working from home where you don't need to interact.
Engage with others: Say "hello" or ask "what do you do?" to fellow co-workers at your table. You never know when you may need to lean into that type of professional.
Another general housekeeping tip? Keep your clutter contained to your workspace!
Whether you have a day pass or a membership, once you’re all caught up on coworking etiquette, take advantage of opportunities like wellness amenities, events, and workshops.
