4 Ways to Reduce Screen Time

Do you find it hard to escape technology?

Even if you don’t work a job where monitors surround you and you are constantly on your phone, our wrists and cars are equipped with mini versions of each!

Many people have been conditioned to think that staring at the big screens, little screens, or both simultaneously counts as being productive because you’re there during work hours when in reality, it can be hurting your output (and health).

What are some ways we can reduce our screen time during the day without feeling immense amounts of guilt and still be productive?

Take a real lunch break, even if it’s short.

At PRIMARY, we have over four common areas, plus small nooks, throughout our two floors of space. Heat your lunch, or pick up takeout, and leave your phone and computer in your office while taking advantage of one of those areas. Not only does this eliminate focusing on tech during lunchtime, but it may also help make your meal more enjoyable and encourage slower eating for better digestion.

Attend a fitness class (that’s included in your membership!).

PRIMARY’s fitness studio and Peloton bikes are available for Member use, but there are also studio classes. Check out the schedule and choose what works for your calendar – there are morning, afternoon, and early evening options. PRIMARY’s classes are designed to optimize time while having a positive impact on well-being, none are longer than 45 minutes giving you enough time to change and get back to your office.

Add breaks to your to-do list.

Sitting for 8+ hours straight isn’t healthy for the body, even if you add in an hour here and there at a standing desk. When making your to-do list for the day, include little breaks that get the legs moving while the phone stays down. In the morning, opt to take a trip to the eighth floor for a custom coffee beverage from PRIMARY’s barista or walk down to the water to see Lady Liberty for a few minutes. Even just taking a big lap around the third floor can help you clear your mind so you can focus on the tasks at hand.

Pick up a book.

Are you an LIRR, subway, NJ Transit, or Metro-North commuter? Chances are, you’ve got at least 10 minutes of downtime. Instead of doom-scrolling, pick up a business or for-leisure book to stimulate your brain, reduce eye strain, and learn something new.
