Make The Most of Your Summer Internship

The summer internship season has arrived. Interns are eager and ready to get started. Inquiries for offices in coworking spaces have been surging in 2023, and show no signs of slowing down, which means the company you’re interning at may be based out of a coworking space like PRIMARY.

Though aesthetically it may appear different than a traditional office space, there are advantages to interning at a company in a coworking space.

Here are just four ways to make the most of your summer internship based out of a coworking space:

First one of the most important – network! When you’re first starting out in your career, meeting people in your industry (and others) can open opportunities, help you decide if that’s the path you want to pursue, create contacts to woo your new boss and discover what the options are in your field. Coworking spaces often have weekly or monthly events where you can mingle with other members at happy hours, educational seminars, or other activities.

Attend events - Members and outside organizations are also often hosting events. Whether it’s teaching how to be a better leader, new technology to streamline processes, what to eat for brain health, or how to improve your resume, there’s always an opportunity to learn something new.

Take advantage of FREE amenities - We were all broke college students, recently graduated, or on a career pivot before. Finances are tight, and contrary to what Instagram tells you, that $6 per day latte will add up when you’re barely bringing anything in. Most coworking spaces offer members coffee, tea, and water at no cost, along with discounted snacks and beverages. PRIMARY elevates the experience with boutique fitness classes, a Peloton room, showers, printing, and meeting rooms, at no extra charge for its Members.

Listen, listen, listen - The best thing to do at an internship, or early on in your career, is absorb everything. Of course, ask questions, but know when to sit back and take in what your colleagues are discussing. Discover how they answer client questions, why they use certain tools, what they do when there’s a crisis and more. Listen to your coworking neighbors too – they may use words or phrases that you can adapt for your own work!

Depending on what industry your internship is in, your schedule each day may be packed to the brim, or you’ll have some downtime. Here are some of our favorite resources for interns:

Intern Queen - Find internship and career advice, including how to give an impressive interview, along with how to elevate your personal brand while still in school.

Handshake - Created by college students, Handshake is an app that helps college students get hired and features a ton of content on their blog that can help you research career paths, create a resume that stands out, and prep for interviews.

Outpost - Moving to NYC for an internship sounds exciting in theory until you see those rent prices. Outpost can help interns find a co-living arrangement for the duration of their internship that doesn’t break the bank.

Eventbrite - Search for events designed for interns like yourself! Meet other people in your industry, learn a new skill, or just meet new friends who are also doing internships.
